The MBL has a long and rich history. Since 1888 the MBL has “served as a gathering spot for biologists who come to Woods Hole not only to work with their favorite marine organisms, but also to converse with each other and exchange ideas in a way that seldom happens in the more limited confines of university biology departments” (Allen 1989, vii). From the beginning, the MBL has acted as a convening place leading scientists and specialists from around the world. The attraction of the MBL is due to a few different factors: the extensive marine and aquatic diversity available for scientific study, the collegial yet intensive scientific atmosphere, and the rich and activity of the surrounding Woods Hole community.
