All the nets, boats, and dredges in the world wouldn’t be useful without experienced people to captain the ships and direct the collecting expeditions. Collecting for the MBL is only successful if collectors know where to go, and it is largely the ship captains that amass and retain this knowledge. Knowing where to find organisms is no easy task, as environments and conditions change and seasons cause species to change locations. These captains are crucial in tracking those changes and knowing how to make adjustments in order to collect the necessary organisms. This chapter profiles a couple of captains at the MBL, though there were many more.
