In 1992, working with Donald Lindberg, the Director of the National Library of Medicine, Cathy started the Medical Informatics course. The course was designed to bring together medical doctors and librarians who were in a position to be change agents in their institutions. After the first few years, due to demand, the course was offered twice a year training 60 students at a time. The course grew and changed as Cathy insisted that it reflect new technologies and changes in the field. In the early days, teaching librarians and doctors to search the databases offered by the National Library of Medicine and making PowerPoint presentations was exciting and new. The course helped participants learn or increase their programming skills in the early 2000’s creating their first website and in later years learning Drupal and R. The course ran for over 20 years, with the last Woods Hole course being held in 2013. Over the years, the course changed the careers of countless students, and became an essential part of training for Biomedical Informatics Librarians.
