How did investigators and students who came to the MBL know what species were around and where to find them? Surveys of marine organisms were produced from massive efforts on behalf of both the MBL and the US Fisheries Commission, these let scientists know where to look for particular species that resided in the area. A few examples of surveys devoted specifically to the Woods Hole region include the “Report upon the Invertebrate Animals of Vineyard Sound and Adjacent Waters, with an account of the Physical Features of the Region” (Verrill and Smith 1873), “A Biological Survey of the Waters of Woods Hole and Vicinity. Part III. A Catalogue of the Marine Fauna” (Sumner et al. 1913), and Methods for Obtaining and Handling Marine Eggs and Embryos (Costello and Henley 1957).
