Using Biodiversity

Biodiversity was one of Charles Otis Whitman’s main justifications for why one ought to do research at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) when it was founded in 1888. The variety of marine forms available in the Woods Hole region were used for many purposes over the years. This digital exhibit delves into the ways that the MBL acted as a central hub for the use of a diverse array of marine life as subjects for biological research in the early 20th century.
