Daily Lives of Collectors: Challenges - Weather

From different logs written by captains over the years, a few aspects of daily life become clear immediately. One is weather. Storms were of great concern and collecting trips were often cancelled due to weather. Storms can roll into Woods Hole quickly, and things like fog can become problematic when navigating a vessel. A notable entry in Valois’ captain's log from July 26, 1961, illustrate some of these frustrations, with his only remark being “No haze for once.” Additionally, winter was a frustrating time for boat captains, as ice trapped boats and sometimes made collecting trips impossible.
